Expressing the transcription factor Gli1 specifically in neurons using the Talpha1 alpha-tubulin promoter protected dopamine-producing brain cells from neurotoxin-induced damage in a rat model of Parkinson's disease. This neuron-targeted approach proved as effective as using a stronger but less specific viral promoter, demonstrating that cell-type-specific gene therapy can be both effective and precise for treating neurological conditions.
