This study tested whether blocking the body's own GHRH affects deep sleep, since previous research had linked GHRH administration to increased slow-wave sleep. When researchers infused a GHRH antagonist overnight in healthy young men, it effectively suppressed growth hormone release by 93% but had no effect on slow-wave sleep or any other sleep measure. This demonstrates that while GHRH is essential for nighttime growth hormone secretion, it does not play a role in generating deep sleep.
