When brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was applied to the spinal cord injury site 2 months after cervical axotomy in rats, it failed to reverse neuronal shrinkage or promote regeneration-associated gene expression in rubrospinal neurons. The failure appeared to be due to loss of trkB receptors on the injured axons over time, highlighting a major challenge for delayed treatment of chronic spinal cord injuries.
