Researchers tested whether giving growth hormone-releasing factor to beef heifers before calving would improve their milk production and reproductive performance. While GRF treatment successfully increased growth hormone levels, it actually led to greater postpartum weight loss and delayed the return to reproductive cycling compared to untreated heifers. The results suggest that elevating GH around calving shifts the animals' metabolism toward mobilizing body reserves without benefits for milk output or fertility.
