Thymosin-alpha-1 was demonstrated to activate tumor-associated macrophages in mice with lymphoma, boosting their production of anti-tumor molecules including IL-1, TNF, reactive oxygen species, and nitric oxide. The activated macrophages showed enhanced abilities to engulf pathogens, present antigens, and kill tumor cells, both after in vivo and direct in vitro treatment with the peptide.
