A study of children with growth hormone deficiency found that the GHRH stimulation test can help distinguish between hypothalamic and pituitary causes of the condition. Children with the most severe forms of GH deficiency, often linked to birth complications and multiple hormone deficiencies, consistently showed poor GH responses to GHRH even after repeated testing. In contrast, children with milder, isolated GH deficiency typically showed normal GHRH responses, suggesting their problem lies in the brain's signaling to the pituitary rather than in the pituitary itself.
