Researchers created transgenic mice with reduced neuronal ERK signaling using the Talpha1 alpha-tubulin promoter to drive expression of a dominant-negative form of MEK1 in neurons. While these mice performed normally on motor and sensory tests, they showed significant impairment in contextual fear conditioning, confirming that the neuronal MEK/ERK signaling pathway plays an important role in learning and memory.
