Scientists attached polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains to sermorelin (GRF 1-29) to create longer-lasting versions of the peptide that resist rapid breakdown in the body. The PEGylated versions retained the ability to bind and activate the GHRH receptor, with the best results coming from attaching a single PEG5000 chain to either the Lys12 or Lys21 position. These optimized conjugates showed biological activity comparable to unmodified sermorelin while offering the potential for much longer duration of action.
