Researchers tested whether giving growth hormone-releasing factor to sows during late pregnancy and lactation would improve milk production and piglet growth. While GRF treatment successfully boosted growth hormone levels and altered body composition in the sows (causing more weight and backfat loss), it did not improve piglet weights or survival rates. The treated sows mobilized more of their own body reserves without translating that into measurable benefits for their offspring.
