Scientists showed that insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) directly regulates kidney filtration function by modifying blood vessel resistance and filtration capacity in the kidney's glomeruli. Infusing IGF-I increased kidney filtration rate by relaxing blood vessels, while suppressing IGF-I with a GHRH antagonist reduced filtration by increasing vessel resistance. These findings suggest that normal fluctuations in IGF-I levels may help regulate kidney function in both health and disease.
