This study revealed that a single injection of growth hormone creates a biphasic feedback effect: it first suppresses the pituitary's responsiveness to GH-releasing factor for about 3 hours, then dramatically enhances it for several hours afterward. The initial suppression is caused by increased somatostatin release, as blocking somatostatin with antibodies completely restored the GH response. This rebound mechanism, where GH stores build up during the suppressed phase for later enhanced release, may help explain why growth hormone is naturally secreted in pulses.
