Scientists demonstrated that three different factors, GHRH, GHRP, and PACAP, each stimulate growth hormone release from individual pituitary cells through separate receptors. Using an assay that measures hormone release from single cells, they found that while somatostatin could inhibit all three pathways, specific antagonists to each factor only blocked their own respective pathway. This reveals that GH secretion is regulated by a more complex multi-receptor system than previously thought.
