Researchers tested growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF) as a diagnostic tool in children with growth hormone deficiency compared to children with normal stature. Most GH-deficient children showed significantly lower GH responses to GRF than normal children, and about 21% of those with GH deficiency showed a partial response, suggesting their problem originates in the brain's hypothalamus rather than the pituitary gland itself. The GRF test proved to be a safe and useful method for pinpointing where in the hormone signaling chain the deficiency occurs.
