Scientists developed a sensitive blood test to measure growth hormone levels in channel catfish and used it to study what triggers GH release in this species. Both GHRH and the synthetic secretagogue GHRP-2 significantly raised plasma GH, as did moving the fish from fresh water to brackish water. This demonstrates that catfish possess the same types of GH-regulatory mechanisms found in mammals, plus an additional salinity-driven pathway relevant to fish biology.
