Epitalon and Livagen both inhibited enzymes that break down enkephalins, the body's natural painkillers. Livagen was significantly more potent, but neither peptide interacted directly with opioid receptors, suggesting their effects on the pain-modulating system work indirectly by preserving higher levels of natural enkephalins in the bloodstream.
