Researchers tested whether galanin, a neuropeptide that normally boosts growth hormone secretion, could restore the blunted GH response seen in patients with hyperthyroidism. Unlike in healthy volunteers where galanin significantly amplified the GH response to GHRH, it had no effect in hyperthyroid patients. This suggests that excess thyroid hormone either increases somatostatin release from the brain or directly impairs the pituitary's ability to secrete growth hormone, overriding galanin's stimulatory effect.
