Scientists discovered that the purine molecule inosine can reactivate the gene program responsible for nerve fiber growth in mature brain neurons. When applied to the intact side of the brain after spinal cord injury in rats, inosine stimulated neurons to sprout new connections that crossed the midline and reinnervated areas that had lost their normal nerve supply. This work identifies a druggable signaling pathway involving the enzyme N-kinase that could potentially be harnessed to promote nerve repair after brain or spinal cord injuries.
