A study in elderly men found that their reduced growth hormone secretion could be partially restored by two weeks of twice-daily GHRH priming injections, suggesting the pituitary had atrophied from lack of GHRH stimulation rather than being inherently damaged. Manipulating somatostatin levels with atenolol failed to restore normal GH responses, arguing against excess somatostatin as the primary cause. These findings point to declining GHRH production from the hypothalamus as the principal driver of age-related growth hormone decline.
