A growth hormone-releasing peptide called KP-102 was shown for the first time to stimulate growth hormone release in a fish species (tilapia), similar to its well-known effects in mammals. The peptide elevated blood GH levels at 6 and 12 hours after injection without significantly affecting prolactin levels. This finding suggests that the receptor system for growth hormone-releasing peptides, and possibly a natural ghrelin-like hormone, exists in fish and other lower vertebrates.
