VIP and PACAP, two neuropeptides, were found to enhance the response of parasympathetic nerve cells to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine by increasing the affinity of nicotinic receptors, acting through distinct receptor subtypes. This potentiation was mediated by a specific G-protein signaling pathway involving the Go protein, rather than through the more commonly studied cAMP pathway. The findings reveal a mechanism by which these neuropeptides can fine-tune nerve signal transmission in the parasympathetic nervous system.
