Long-term GHRH treatment in young female rats increased body weight only at the highest dose tested, while continuous GHRH infusion via slow-release pellets raised blood GH levels but was not sufficient alone to increase body weight. Adding daily somatostatin injections abolished the pituitary effects of continuous GHRH, but when both peptides were given as intermittent injections, they appeared to balance each other's effects on the hypothalamus. These results show that young female rats remain responsive to chronic GHRH and somatostatin treatment at both the pituitary and hypothalamic levels.
