Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), a neuropeptide released by skin nerve fibers during stress, was found to stimulate the growth of human keratinocyte cells by increasing production of the growth factor TGF-alpha rather than through the expected cAMP signaling pathway. Even fragments of VIP promoted cell growth through the same TGF-alpha mechanism. This finding helps explain why psychological stress can worsen psoriasis, a skin condition characterized by excessive keratinocyte proliferation.
