This study provided evidence that thymosin alpha-1 is naturally present in the rat central nervous system, not just as an immune system hormone. Immunohistochemical analysis using a polyclonal antibody revealed thymosin alpha-1 in neurons of the hippocampus and spinal cord, and in glial-like cells of specific brain regions. Additionally, iodinated thymosin alpha-1 injected into the brain ventricle labeled neurons in the hypothalamus and septal nuclei, demonstrating that specific neuronal populations can both express and respond to this peptide.
