Researchers tested whether the growth hormone response to GHRH could predict future growth performance in beef bulls, and found that bulls with a larger GH response grew faster and had less carcass fat. The area under the GH response curve proved to be a better predictor of future growth performance than traditional measures like weaning weight or expected progeny differences. This GH response test could serve as a useful tool for selecting superior sires in beef cattle production.
