A 14-day course of GHRH treatment had markedly different effects on pituitary GHRH receptors depending on the age of the rats studied. In young rats, a low dose increased receptor numbers while a high dose decreased them, whereas in aged rats, the higher dose was needed to restore receptor binding properties and gene expression to youthful levels. These findings suggest that chronic GHRH treatment can rejuvenate the aging pituitary's responsiveness, but requires higher doses than in young animals.
