Scientists characterized a receptor for VIP-related peptides in frog skin pigment cells, finding that helodermin was the most potent activator of pigment dispersion, followed by PACAP 38, VIP, and PACAP 27. The receptor stimulated cAMP accumulation and pigment spreading, and its responses were blocked by specific VIP antagonists. This receptor shares some features with known VIP receptors but also differs significantly, representing a distinct receptor subtype.
